Entries for December, 2007
Until I get my thesis all oiled up to propel me to the graduation ceremony, (hopefully this 'oiling' will be until the end of December only....)
I might not be making any new articles. -_-
For the first time in a very long while, I found myself stopping. To think.
I had pushed myself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually all this time and now that it's over, I was quite ready to die. I'd lie down my bed, and never wake up. The thought was marvelous. It throbbed in my brain as I got closer to my apartment.
I frantically dug my hand into my bag and felt the rubber key chain. It was a baby Chuck Taylor edition. I loved it. It was so big it was hard to miss. I got it out. There was no key. I emptied the contents of my bag but there was no key, only the over-sized key chain.
I, I needed that key! I needed to get in my apartment! My computer was inside! I had important documents I had to upload, I had a paper to finish, I had to do some laundry!
For the first time in a very long while, I found myself stopping. To think. I looked at the key chain in my hand. I fumbled in my bag for my cellphone. My hand reached a round fuzzy toy. It was what I tied to my phone, so I could find it easily. I got the phone out and dialed my boyfriend's number.
"What time will you be home? I forgot my keys. Again."

Okay so that seriously happened. A dramatization of a stupid incident. Hey, I'm sleep-deprived and energy-spent. What's a screw-up like this? I don't know if you're waiting for me to come back online but I have some few things to share anyway, regardless of whether people read this or not. How sad though, if there were none.
Like I'd be such a loser.
Anyway, here's a low-down on House Beautiful first. WTF is it anyway? Well, it's this.

GOOD NEWS #2
I do Manga reviews for the site, and occasionally other posts. Check it out right here. OR! If you don't care about the site and stuff, but care for me, take a look at my profile here anyway. :pGOOD NEWS #3

If you care for some bad news, I have a few of them too.

Bad news + Good news = 0. so... I guess "no pain, no gain"? It was a joke, a joke.
Who has never dreamed of becoming a rock star? You must have, even if it was once or twice, or everyday. Because rock stars are cool. ^^
Tanaka Yukio was probably different. He listened to girly music too. He couldn't have dreamt of things like that. Well, not until he met Rey, anyway.
Minami Rey is an insanely talented guitarist. After saving each other's asses a couple of times, Yukio and he become friends. Yukio learns the guitar.
After refusing to dye his hair for a gig, Rey quits his band.
One night, Yukio sings. Then he begins to dream.

REVIEW:
Why is the title Beck? No, it's not the rock band. It's the name of Ryuusuke's (Rey's) dog, whom they named their own band after. Beck is a result of a crazy and merciless experiment. His body is a patchwork from different dogs. Although the band members may not have thought it when they named themselves, the dog happens to symbolize them as they are all very different people, but manage to survive as one band despite having been manipulated or played with.
It's as if Tanaka Yukio and his band is played by fate. The question of whether they were made to hit in America does not remain. You will find out soon enough. ^^

From the Anime adaptation
Don't you just love it when you see the underdog (literally and figuratively) triumph?
Tanaka Koyuki is a very coincidental protagonist in this story. If he hadn't met Rey (or Ryuusuke), could his life still have turned out like the way it did? If he did this, or did that?
Sometimes people hate coincidental protagonists. Take Harry Potter for example. He was not innately talented or anything. He was merely special because of the people around him. Moreover, the characters seemed to stand out more than he did, it's just that we were reading his story.
I just had to take reference of a very famous book to proceed with my analysis with this story. The main difference between Koyuki and all other protagonists of this type is that when luck comes to him, he thrusts himself into it like there's no tomorrow. It's as if he knows that he'll get there, and luck just speeds him up.
This is why I also like Koyuki's character very much. He is very aggressive about his dream, which is an extreme change from where we first see him. And this change is brought about by different encounters with himself, his bandmates, colleagues, and music.
Characterization is an important and heavy element in a story. But in Beck, Harold Sakuishi puts that as icing on the cake. The plot and story about a struggling band who faces serious adversaries are what really make up the cake. As you can see, the art is also very interesting and has its own style. The mangaka really delivers, complete with box and ribbon.
Title: BECK (sometimes referred to as MCS or Mongolian Chop Squad, as you will realize when you read it)
Author: Sakuishi Harold
Type: Graphic Novel/ Manga
Genre: Shounen
Vintage: 2000
Rating:

/10
Where to get it: The Spectrum (online reading), MCS scans, Phase 3 scans
Note: Beck has been adapted into an anime and I loved the soundtrack! They had to have a good soundtrack to pull off this kind of story, and no worries about that when there are tracks from Beat Crusaders and Tropical Gorilla.
The title of the article, by the way, was the title of the anime's opening song by Beat Crusaders.
