Jen, I’m home. Jen? Geez! Don’t scare me like that! Where were you, the lights were out? Did you go see mom today? Yeah? She’s eating? Don’t you think she’s getting too thin? Yeah? Not even your jello? Haha not even your jello! Then you should cook something better Jen. Did you eat? I bought you McDonalds.
No, I was- I was out. Don’t talk smart, hey. I’m a lot older. It’s none of your business, Jen. I said I was out, okay?
This? I uh- I bought it. It’s really cold, I just thought of buying one, what’s the big deal? I’ll get you one next time, okay? What color would you like? Oh, yeah, you like blue, right? Hey, don’t walk out, hey! I’m not changing the topic-
No, wait, Jen! Okay, okay, I’ll tell you. It’s got something to do with the phone call. The one I wouldn’t talk about. Yeah I’ve been getting much of it lately. Especially after mom’s hospitalization. Don’t freak out, okay? Promise not to freak out. I saw him today. Or… it’s rather I met him. Not by accident. The phone calls, Jen. He’s been calling me all this time. Don’t hate me for not telling you, okay?
What, you don’t- hey, I told you not to play with my flashlight, hey! I’m talking here! What, you don’t want to hear it? You don’t wanna know what he said? Yeah, I thought you would.
He said he missed you Jen. Yeah, he missed me too, he said. What, you want to see him? He’s gone now, he went somewhere. I, I don’t know, Jen, okay? He just wanted to have some dinner with me. Well he thought, he thought you might not recognize him if you saw him.
You wanna know what I ordered? I had a steak, Jen. Something good, for a change. You never cook anything decent. Ouch! Hey! I was just kidding!
Hey… hey. I didn’t mean it. He said he missed you okay? Well it was a really brief meeting and I finished my steak up fast we didn’t get to talk about those things. I’m sure you had a lotta questions, Jen. Me too.
Haha, you wanted steak too? Sorry I remembered you were craving chicken nuggets yesterday. Hey, you’re okay now? You wanna meet him? I said I- I said I don’t know, didn’t I? I mean, do you even remember him, Jen? Do you remember his face? Do you remember his laugh? Huh? You can’t just want to meet somebody you don’t even remember, right?
What, you think it’s unfair? You think I enjoyed it?! You think I could take a bite at the steak?!
Wait, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be shouting, I’m sorry. It’s just… It’s all so unfair, Jen. I couldn’t eat anything. He bought me this scarf. He bought me gifts, Jen, thinking I’m still ten years old. He thought I’d forget everything after a steak and some gifts, Jen.
I lied. We talked, no… he talked for a long time. Trying to ask questions, I didn’t like answering. He asked about school. He didn’t even know I quit it, Jen. Of course, how could he? He even smiled that I still got his rosary. He asked about you… He looked- happy, Jen. Successful. It’s just so unfair.
I told him about you, though. I told him you grew up to be so beautiful. Hey. You don’t remember him, right? You don’t want to see him right? He didn’t even want to see you, Jen. He’s scared you might not know him. The coward. Can’t take a beating from you, haha. Hah…
Yeah I told him about mom too. How he heard about her, I don’t know. I didn’t tell him why, though. Why she wouldn’t eat, or why she just- gave up, you know? I couldn’t tell him, Jen. That would give him too much credit. And the last thing I wanted was pity from him.
I don’t understand it, Jen. I said I didn’t want his pity, but I don’t understand anything I’m feeling right now. I swear I want to tear up this rosary, but, you know, I’d end up picking up the beads. You get me, Jen?
Hey, don’t look at me like that. I didn’t eat any of the steak, I swear. I left everything on the table, but when I went out it was cold has hell. So I came back for it, haha. Stupid, right? When I came back in, the package was still there. But he was gone. Haha, stupid.
NOTE: for the benefit of the readers, this is another Creative Writing 10 exercise, where we were told to write flash fiction out of three items of choice given (keys, rosary, flashlight). Items need not manifest in the story, but the character must be defined as someone having to own such items. The style of the flash fiction is "fixed", that we were instructed that the content be 100% pure talk from the character.
